Neonatal Care Equipment:Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

What’s in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit?

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the part of the hospital that provides care for premature or sick newborn babies. The medical equipment used in the NICU is designed to provide a supportive environment for newborn babies, monitor their vital signs, and provide them with the support and care they need.

Babies are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) because they may:

  • Require ventilation and/or continuous positive airway pressure ventilation (CPAP) for respiratory support.
  • Have a serious illness that affects breathing.
  • Are awaiting surgery or have just undergone surgery.
  • Have a serious infection.

Equipment used in the NICU

To meet the 4 main needs of a newborn baby: warmth, breathing, feeding and blood flow, this equipment protects your baby and keeps him/her comfortable.

  • Infant Incubator
  • Infant Radiant Warmer
  • Ventilator
  • Phototherapy Equipment
  • Pediatric Monitor
  • Infusion/Syringe Pump
  • Oxygen Mask

1. Infant Incubator

Incubators in the NICU provide a controlled environment for newborns in the NICU, including temperature and humidity, while also providing a barrier from external environmental factors. They are designed to mimic the womb, providing a safe and comfortable place for premature or unwell newborns to grow and develop.

2. Infant Radiant Warmer

Radiant heaters are the most basic piece of equipment in the NICU and are used to maintain a newborn’s body temperature and limit metabolic rate. Because sick or premature infants may have

difficulty regulating their body temperature, the heater is used as an artificial support engine to maintain their body temperature.

3. Ventilators

Premature or sick babies often have difficulty breathing on their own and need support. There are two common types of ventilators used for babies in the NICU:
Positive pressure ventilators deliver air or oxygen to the baby’s lungs through tubes and can adjust the flow rate according to the baby’s needs.
High-frequency oscillatory ventilators deliver small amounts of air or oxygen to the baby’s lungs at a faster rate than other ventilators.

4. Phototherapy Equipment

Neonatal jaundice is more common than you might think and it is normal for babies to be born with slightly higher bilirubin levels. Jaundice levels are often reduced using phototherapy, which exposes the newborn’s skin to a special blue or green light, which helps to break down the bilirubin.

5. Pediatric Monitor

Newborn monitoring devices are used to track vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. These machines provide real-time data that can alert NICU staff to any changes in the newborn’s condition, allowing them to act quickly.

6. Infusion/Syringe Pumps

Provide fluids, food and medications that your baby may need. These pumps deliver precise doses at a rate and time that meets your baby’s unique needs.

7. Oxygen Mask

Oxygen masks are suitable for infants who can breathe on their own but still need extra oxygen. Oxygen can be piped directly into the incubator.

Conclusion

The NICU has the necessary equipment to control the baby’s temperature, oxygen, heart rate and so on. These devices help provide the best possible care and development for premature or sick newborns. Each piece of equipment has a special purpose in the treatment of your baby. Contact us to learn more about some of the devices used in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
